This brillianr movie, however, shows that there was a time, merely 13 years after the end of WWII, when the common german citizen didnt know what the name Auschwitz meant, or believed that death camps were merely propaganda from the victorious allied forces.
It also shows that the de-nazification process either was a complete fake or ended way before it should, probably in part as the result of the cold war and the existance of a new enemy, the soviet communists.
Many former Nazis were in important positions in West Germany and did what they could to avoid the investigations shown in the movie. And what is worse, many people who were not war criminals themselves really thought that these criminals should not be bothered.
That everyone in the country was "coerced" by Hitler and should not be accounted for their actions, when now we know that most wilingly embraced Hitler's madness.
And most of all, it shows that just one person can make a difference and make the world better, when we still have our moral compass.
Labyrinth of Lies is to Germany what the movie "Spotlight" was to the U. Roman Catholic Church: There's an open secret out there but no one wants to deal with it.
No one wants to bring it up. Because so many people are in on it. The open secret in this movie takes place in the late s in Germany.
Thousands of German men did awful things during The War, but they're regular citizens now, with children, wives, and businesses.
No one wants to deal with what they did. No one wants to know about some place called Auschwitz. No one wants to admit their father or husband did such awful things.
No one wants to re-hash the N-word. Which in this case is Nazi. Except a young, law-abiding, low level prosecutor. He was too young during The War, and the open secret about his country's past angers him.
He gets permission to start low-level prosecutions of these war criminals-turned-ordinary men again. But then he gets overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the horror and by how many were complicit in the horror.
Including men linked to him. The rest of the movie is about how he handles being overwhelmed. The acting in Labyrinth is excellent. And the actors aren't well known, so they are absolutely believable.
The story line flows very well and is very believable too. The beautiful, artsy love interest of the young prosecutor also fits in great with this movie.
What happens between them makes this a great movie too. This is an outstanding movie that should appeal to you no matter who you are.
It's one of the few you really should watch, as it tells a real, gripping truth about recent history. One person found this helpful. Known as Labyrinth of Lies in English, the German title is Das Labyrinth des Schweigens Labyrinth of Silence , which is much closer to the heart of this compelling mids story about "hidden" Nazis in postwar German society who tried to ignore their pasts and pretend they never happened.
But when one former Nazi is outed as a schoolteacher, a state prosecutor in Frankfurt is spurred to action by a journalist friend.
The film introduces us to a young and impressive Alexander Fehling who may be more familiar to American audiences as Claire Danes's husband in the current season of Homeland.
While Fehling may be the most notable new German actor in Labyrinth, there are numerous other players equally well cast. No spoiler-alert here, but the film is extremely well crafted and takes us breathlessly to stunning courtroom scenes that serve as a thoughtful reminder of this poignant chapter in human history.
A "must-add" DVD for those who cherish their own German film collections. This film was just incredible. The complexities of the writing truly depicted the complexities of the circumstances.
As an avid history buff who particularly has studied the era of Nazi Germany, I find one of the most neglected story told is that of the German citizens who lived through their country being hijacked by Sadist, fascist, murdering cowards.
How did they survive that ordeal and how did they come to terms with their actions to survive, to keep their families safe and how did those generations after learn of what they did and judge it.
A talk, fit, handsome blonde haired, blue eyed man. But his beliefs stood light years away from the Nazi. The emotions are palpable. This movie was brilliant and the people courageous: survivors and those who fought to tale their experiences.

Top reviews from other countries. This film got very mixed reviews from the critics: 2 out of 5 from the Guardian, who claimed it didn't fit into any category.
Is that a reason I ask; not for me. So it isn't a detective, thriller, romance, spy or whatever story, not a "proper" legal drama either.
Well, maybe, but it is still an excellent film. It gains in authenticity by being German even if it doesn't have Tom Hanks in the starring role. It was Adenauer's clear policy in the afterwar years to let bygones be bygones.
The result was a form of mass amnesia which resulted in a very superficial de-nazification of West Germany. The majority of administrative posts staying in the hands of the same people who had held them under Hitler's 3rd Reich.
In this climate of denial a young, nerdy, and rather obsessive lawyer discovers that ex Auschwitz personnel have found easy employment with no questions asked.
He finds camp survivors who recognize them; but no-one wants to know. It's a simple story that needed telling and is well told.
Its a good film, very informative if your interested in knowing more about the holocaust. Unless you are fluent in German you will have to read subtitles though, that said it was well worth it.
Report abuse. This is an excellent film - not only is the content really good, but it's a beautifully crafted film. A must-see, in my opinion.
