And furthermore and most essentially, importantly, Lotta zieht um was also the very first Astrid Lindgren novel I read entirely on my own without having either my mother or my grandmothers read to me and thus, I have always had a most precious sense of nostalgia with regard to in particular Lotta zieht um , as it not only was a sweetly entertaining and fun reading journey for seven year old I, it also showed both my mother and me that I was indeed now more than ready to approach and tackle Astrid Lindgren on my own from thence on, and come Christmas, I received a huge stack of delightful Astrid Lindgren novels, including ALL of the Emil, the Noisy Village and the Madicken books.

However and frustratingly, this here British translation penned by Tom Geddes, with accompanying illustrations by Tony Ross really has been quite massively and personally disappointing.

For one, even the title of this translation, Lotta Makes a Mess! As while five year old Lotta indeed misbehaves and makes a bit of a mess when she uses scissors to destroy her woollen jumper, her woollen sweater, and then tosses it into the garbage can in order to cover up her deed, the main storyline presented in Lotta Makes a Mess!

Berg's and to also apologise for being in a foul mood all day and destroying her woollen jumper. And for two, it does most definitely narrationally and textually bother me more than a bit that Lotta's siblings who are called Jonas and Mia-Maria in Lotta zieht um and I believe also in the Swedish original have been rendered by Tom Geddes into Joe and Mary-Lou in Lotta Makes a Mess!

And therefore, while I still do believe that thematically and content wise, Tom Geddes has I guess sufficiently enough captured the feel and the scenarios of Astrid Lindgren's original and her intentions, textually, how he has titled the book and especially with regard to some of the word choices used including having Lotta move into Mrs.

Berg's junk loft instead of calling it an attic , he has definitely more than missed the proverbial boat for me personally. Thus only a one star rating for this particular translation, for Lotta Makes a Mess!

Nonplussed, her mom descends the stairs to the kitchen. Soon afterwards, she calls up to tell Lotta that her hot chocolate is ready. The illustration shows Lotta marching into the kitchen with Bamsie in tow.

Berg, their neighbour, if she can live with her. Berg nearby, I could hear alarm bells going off, especially during this day and age when most parents chauffeur their children everywhere, and in many cases, never let them out of their sight, let alone leave them home alone.

And certainly, Lotta is headstrong and determined, but not nearly as independent as Pippi, who does live alone and is the character Astrid Lindberg created that caused so much controversy over the years.

Suffice it to say that, in this translation at least, Mrs. After much reorganizing and dusting, and a system set up for receiving the delivery of food from Mrs.

The color cover picture and several black and white illustrations in the book are quite sweet. Lindgren definitely captures what it feels like to be an angry child.

The family and the neighbor are warm and appealing. I also loved the humor in the book. Even the street name is amusing. View all 6 comments. Shelves: chapter-books , swedish-children , family-stories , childrens-fiction , childrens-translations.

Lotta wakes up one morning in a terrible mood, having dreamt that her older brother and sister were beating up on her beloved toy pig, Bamsie.

Things progress from bad to worse when Mother won't let Lotta wear her Sunday dress, but instead insists that she wear a sweater that "tickles and scratches.

Berg's house, where she takes up residence in an old shed. Will Lotta ever move back in with her own family, the Nymans? Lotta on Troublemaker Street was highly recommended by my friend Manny, whose own online review is a glowing homage to the humanity of Swedish parenting practices.

I too was impressed with the way in which Lotta's mother and father handle her defection, not to mention Mrs. Berg's calm acceptance of her presence.

Their respect for her feelings, the fact that they never try to coerce her into doing as they think best, but let her decide to come home on her own, struck me as quite wise.

Of course, it's not as if she were in any real danger But as appealing as this book may be to the adult reader, it is also an entertaining story that young readers will take to heart.

Who has not experienced, as a young child, that sense of overwhelming anger, sometimes for no good reason at all? In Lotta, children will recognize an important aspect of their own emotional experience, depicted with compassion.

Not surprisingly, given that it was written by Lindgren, this is a little gem! View all 3 comments. This review also appears on my blog, Read-at-Home Mom.

Lotta is five years old, and she lives on Troublemaker Street with her parents, older siblings, Maria and Jonas, and her stuffed pig, Bamsie.

She was born into a family that already had two kids - Jonas and Maria. Of the three siblings, Jonas was the oldest, followed by Maria and then Lotta.

The kids were known to get into a lot mischief that would often drive their father wild. This was the premise of most of the Lotta stories.

Jonas, the most mischievous was called by their father as Big Noise and Maria was often called as Little Noise.

And when Lotta came along in the household, she was given the title of Little Nut. In most of the books, this is how her father often calls her, sometimes admonishingly but also sometimes lovingly.

The character of Mrs. To me, your books are childhood memories and fantasies captured on paper. They burst and splash at you like a happy summer day of playing with the water hose.

Your books fill me with happiness I never realized, I never knew. Your books fill me with happiness and childish delight.

Thank you. Rest In Peace Astrid Lindren, writer of childhood contents. I just read this book to my daughter. She enjoyed it, but I don't remember Lotta being so naughty when I read it as a child.

She cuts up her sweater that her grandma made her because she doesn't like it and runs away from home. Maybe not the best ideas to be planting in a 5 year old head!

I also thought it strange that Lotta's mother leaves her at home while she goes shopping for the day. The story says that Lotta isn't old enought for school yet so she must be pretty young!

Lotta becomes angry with her mother when assigned to wear a scratchy sweater. She cuts the sweater up horrors! Her next door neighbor lets her set up a little house in the backyard, and Lotta decides she will live there forever.

She dusts a lot. Lotta ends up going home in the end, of course! I like this book by the author of Pippi Longstocking, because I think so many children can relate to Lotta's anger.

Mari really liked this one, but I thought Lotta was a real brat. Why do so many little girls books have snotty main characters?

Junie B Jones is another one In this first book of several in a series by the same author as Pippi Longstocking, Lotta decides to move out when her mother insists she wear a sweater she finds itchy.

Lotta goes to "live" in the neighbor's shed attic, but decides when it gets dark that she'd rather be at home with her mom and dad and brother and sister.

Unlike the first Lotta book, which is composed of darling little vignettes, this has a continuing narrative arc. Charming and cathartic for a listening five year old, Lotta is genuinely naughty, but we love her anyway.

An excellent introduction to "chapter books". I remember reading this as a kid and all the other books by Astrid Lindgren while I still lived in Poland and now it is very interesting to see how much true facts about the Swedish society she conveyed in her books!

My mom got this book for my five-year-old son because she remembered her mom reading it to her and her sisters when she was a kid.

I really enjoyed reading it to Gavin and he dug it, too. We're going to read The Children on Troublemaker Street next. Apr 25, Hobby rated it liked it Shelves: shelves-reading-again , genre-children-lit , themes-family , themes-adventure , shelves-printed-books-owned-copies.

This book is so sweet and funny! I loved it when I was a little girl and have enjoyed sharing it with my own daughter.

I need to get more of this series!! My Arabic teacher in elementary school bought me this book in Arabic. This is the first book I remember reading and it holds a special place in my heart.

Oh so much fun! Kids get to be independent, but with the support of loving, unpatronising parents and other adults. A joy to read, a delight to share.

Short but very very sweet. First book I ever read for myself. Cute story. Lotta was a bit annoying at times, but maybe I would have liked it more if I read it as a child.

If you can't stand your family, move! Even if you're just a kid. Funny story. All three of my kids loved the book and asked me to read it to them over and over again.

It is a great book for year olds. Jan 13, Amel Armeliana rated it really liked it Shelves: childhood-books , terjemahan , must-read-books.

This is one of my favorite childhood book. I love Lotta :. Starting out I had higher hopes for this story. As i began reading I realized this chapter book is definitely for younger readers.

I would beg to differ with the suggested reader ages of 7 - Unless, of course, said year old has a younger sibling who acts similarly to Lotta. As the main character is 5, I think the audience is really 5- to 7-year olds.

Once I embraced the 5-year old and tapped into my own experiences - from actions in dreams coloring my day to running away - I liked the story better.

Until then it was difficult to get past Lotta's tantrum. This is a good story about a youngster's bad day and how it was turned around.

I liked reading it and enjoyed the writing style. The illustrations were really good too; fit the story well.

However, I'm glad I had a coupon to use for the purchase. Now this was adorable! I loved how Lotta was just not having it and went her own way in this one and also I really appreciated the reactions of the adults here.

This is more of an ongoing story and worked perfectly in its length. The illustrations were super sweet too and this is definitely one I would recommend to kids!

It mad me kinda sad as a child. Now i know why. As a child I had a lot of fun reading this book. Lotta's adventures were very exciting and funny to me.
