The movie is one long slog of an American family behaving badly in Europe while they lounge around and do nothing.
Because they're all miserable, mentally ill, or both. Most of the movie centers around her getting-creepier-by-the-scene relationship with her son, who is the most messed up of all.
The "sexuality" promised in the teaser is exactly what you feared after enduring this awful mother-and-son combo: these two are committing incest with each other.
So now, not only is the movie plodding and dull, it's creepy and cringeworthy. And Yes, this film shows the incest scenes. Finally, the "scandal" promised in the teaser doesn't come at the beginning of the film - which would improve it - but rather at the very end.
And it's not much of a scandal. In fact, it's very predictable based on how sick these people are. And by the end of this sick, plodding movie about despicable people, you don't really care either.

Bought the movie because Eddie Redmayne was starring. Acting was incredible, script good, scenery amazing. One scene was almost too much for me, mom has sex with her son and then gives him a handjob.
I suppose that did serve to underscore the end of the movie, however, could have been done more discreet. In any case, based on a true and tragic story of a young man whose life is on edge from the time of birth through his years of parents separation, trying to pin down his sexuality, loss of friends, loss of dad that culminates in a most tragic end.
I had forgotten how compelling the book "Savage Grace" was until I was faced with the absurd tedium of the film. Talk about style over substance, and not really all that much style to boot.
I'm afraid what was a compelling story of the dangers of indolence, inherited money, alcoholism, drugs and the complete absence of boundaries became a one-dimensional cinematic experience.
All nuance between Barbara and her son were missing, all of the small connections and alliances which added up to the probable sexual relationship which added to the toxic mix of what was their aimless existence.
I will say that the graphic sexual reality exposed in the film was disturbing and uncomfortable and did create an understanding of why this unbalanced and tragic young man would want to kill his own mother.
Additionally, none of the physical signs of aging and dissipation were visible in Julianne Moore throughout the film, only her clothes indicating the passage of time.
In truth Barbara Bakeland's physical appearance changed considerably during the twenty some years she spent roaming the world with her son and she was not the striking young woman as represented in the film at the end of her life.
This seemed to me to be the worst movie I have ever seen in almost every way and I have seen more than a thousand movies in more than 50 years. There are very few films which stars Julianne Moore that I don't like.
This was one of them. Her performances are always good and she submerses herself in each role that she takes on but this one was odd.
The characters lived in the world of high society, which they were either born or wed into, that allowed them to skate across a pond of superficiality and unwarranted self importance.

Yes, it is relatively quiet without all the noise and explosions; not all murders have to be that of the Freddy Krueger variety, nor need the characters be wild and batty.
This is a quiet movie with very intense moments, which often do not mix well. Something gets lost in the quiet. I guess people aren't used to that.

The story is horrid, be under no illusions and the tragic tale is almost Greek in its impact. Those who were bored by this film or failed to read the final heart reaching information miss the whole point.
This is NOT Hollywood, this is not an over cooked drama, this is a true story. There only remains to be said that the direction, visuals; especially the passing of time conveyed so subtly, and above all the acting holds a grip which is both emotional and discomforting.
The film is at times a challenge since it does not flinch from the facts and the real relationships in any way. Although the film is not new I have only just seen it having been very nervous about how the story could be conveyed.
The answer turned out to be superbly, and if you want to watch superb acting and a deeply uncomfortable depiction of an incestuous and ultimately tragic true story then watch this film.

It's like Gatsby on heroin or something Moore is amazing; and the real Barbara Baeklund was a striking redhead, too, so it works visually also.
