Conclusion It is difficult to see the advantages the Nazis could get from this film, apart from justifying to the wide German public the anti-capitalist discourse the regime broadcast day after day, but targeting first of all Anglo-Saxon capitalism as being inhuman, selfish, exploitative, highly anti-egalitarian, etc.
But Nazi Germany was also a capitalist country, exploitative, inhuman, selfish and highly anti-egalitarian, etc. The film manages to be spectacular without all the special effects we have today because of the creative acting of actors; the very dynamic editing; the creative camera and imaging management; the creative settings; and lights, plus the sound.
The re-formatting of this old film has of course improved some aspects. The film is worth seeing and the panic scenes are very convincing.
Having an avid interest in the infamous Great Ship and her catastrophic fate when I first heard of this film I was curious.
When I read on and learned that it was a vehicle for propaganda made by the Nazi's I was intrigued. Who would have guessed that in the midst of all their evil doing the Nazi's sought out to make a production of Titanic?
It's just so bizarre. According to Wikipedia, the film didn't receive a widespread release though.
After seeing scenes of insubordination from lower ranking officers and scenes that reflected what the Nazi's were doing in the concentration camps to the Jews, Josef Goebbels and other high ranking Nazi's officials deemed it potentially hazardous to the party's image.
As a result the film only had one theatrical run and then underwent a series of rereleases in cut and uncut form. Fortunately for North American viewers we have the privilege of seeing this film in its uncut form.
I dont think I really need to provide an in-depth summary of the story since the majority of people who come upon this movie have likely seen the Titanic story in one form or another.
What I will provide though is a description of the propaganda that was not so subtly mixed in the script.
In order to portray the British as capitalist money hungry elitists, the movie depicts historical figures such as Bruce Ismay and John Jacob Astor IV as trying to cheat one another for profit.
Getting the Titanic to New York a day early isn't about pride in this feature so much as it is about greed by increasing shares in the White Star Line.
The hero to balance out these corporate villains, happens to be the only German crewman who repeatedly entreats the first class passengers and Ismay to reconsider their plans.
He is a straight laced no nonsense character that was clearly designed to contrast with the British corruption.
The SFX arent too bad for a film. Wikipedia also says that the budget for this film was the highest for it's time. What I found particularly interesting is how the ship is shown to sink.
It would be another 40 years that Robert Ballard and his crew discovered the wreck of Titanic and learned it had split in two shortly before sinking.
Prior to Ballards discovery the general consensus was that the ship had sunk in one piece. Interesting little tidbit of history. The special features are minimal but worthwhile.
There's the original theatrical trailer and the other two appear to be promotional videos that the White Star Line may have somehow used to promote the Titanic and Olympic.
What is impressive is the clips contain original footage shot of these ships and their interiors. When you see all these people cheering from the Titanic, excited to be on a technological marvel, only to know they would be going to their deaths it's surreal.
I'd recommend this film primarily as a historical document. It's not nearly as well researched or reproduced as James Cameron's masterpiece, but it is interesting.
Films like this are a testament to how governments attempt to indoctrinate the masses through entertainment.

It's also valuable for the appearance of Sybille Schmitz, a rare actress, known for her part in the classical "Vampyr" Also Hans Nielsen deserves a special attention as officer Peterson.
Compared to Cameron's film, which was more romantic and maybe dedicated to a younger audience, this seems more neutral, more authentic.
All is said in few words, commands and love, almost elliptic ; characters are a bit strong underlined regarding the management, focusing on greed.
To get a glimpse of the general mood of this time, and the strong moral code in the marine, this movie is worth going for.
