I've watched this probably 10 times with my daughter, and every time I notice some piece of the plot that takes me deeper into understanding this story.
It really is brilliant, a warning about the dangers of arrogance, of balancing the good of the individual and the good of the whole community. I never really "got" the mother's perspective until the last couple times I watched it - I just thought of her as trying to hold her daughter down, but she has her own good motivations rooted in a deep understanding of her culture's legends.
A couple critiques: Merida's central struggle with her mother is about choosing a man to marry. I look forward to the time when four-year-old girls don't have to think about their relationship to romantic love.
There are plenty of other mechanisms that could have suited this purpose choosing a role in the community, for example.
The Moana storyline handled this extremely well. Finally, there are no models for positive masculinity in this movie, which is a shame. A feminine hero doesn't require the context of clumsy masculinity.
This is harmful to our current masculine culture, which can use all the help it can get. I feel bad for the boys who watch this movie, and I hope for something more balanced in the future.

At least Ariel only set out to change herself. Meridia on the other hand There is just no excuse for her actions. She may have intended to have the mind altered instead of the body but that is so much worse considering she intentional chose to do so to someone that genuinely loved her is evil!
Which almost got everyone killed! Meridia is the villain of this movie no matter how much they tried to make it the bear who fell into the same trap by asking for something FAR less cruel.
And Disney just brushed all of that under the rug and said, "See! Everyone changed for the better and lived happily ever after.
Hello ladies of the wild heart who still have some lessons to learn about family, love, duty and honor A bit scary for the tots with a small section facing off against a bear I'd say keep it away from kids who scare easily until they are at the tender age of An adorable movie.

It's cute, great music, and we love that Merida is free-spirited young woman who wants to be more than just a wife; but at the same time, she and her mother learn about the importance of family and balancing our needs with our family's needs.

My mother was able to watch the movie without us having to pause and describe every scene to her. She didn't miss a thing. Accessibility for the blind is a great feature that I wish all DVDs had.

Top reviews from other countries. It's possibly the most stunning animation I have ever seen. Pixar really put a lot into capturing the vibrant, magical beauty of Scotland giving the film a jaw-dropping look.
Funny as it may sound Disney could have opted for American actors but instead made a very wise decision and used Scottish actors. It was also great hearing Young McGuffin played by McKidd using the Doric dialect Aberdeen as it's so thick its indiscernible what he's saying.
In fact I'm very pleased that Disney went for an authentic Scottish script that didn't overemphasise any stereotypes although they had to have a haggis gag in there.
I thought the story was unique, despite many so-called critics referring to this film as a traditional fairytale.
It's not at all, it's a film about a Mother and Daughters relationship which I've certainly never seen done before.
It has elements of a more traditional fairy tale but this sits very well with the setting so it's not contrived.
Its a really good strong female lead role for once without the need for a bumbling or otherwise prince saving the fair maiden etc.
The 3D was stunning, you could watch Merida's hair all day. I really enjoyed the whole package, the songs were fantastic too. Anyway, please get this film for your kids and for yourself, it's a great story with a stunning look and will be one to watch again and again.
For a Pixar movie, this isn't one of their best. Fortunately, with a back catalogue that includes the Toy Story trilogy, Up, The Incredibles and A Bug's Life, this isn't as great a criticism as it might be.
When released in the cinema, some parents were concerned about the scarier scenes involving the bears but my younger daughter was more concerned by the mother-daughter arguments.
The 3D conversion works fine, though it does make the film darker and mute the vibrant colours of the computer-generated Scottish countryside, so the 2D Blu-Ray version is the one we prefer.

I, the mom, loved it. I loved the relationship between the parents, the folklore woven in and the beautiful scenery. Mind you, Scotland is our second home.
I gave it 4 stars because we only got partway through the movie when our 5 year old informed us he didn't want to watch anymore because the movie was scary we we're at the witch's house.
Go figure. While it didn't crash the system, I tried 4 different players, no joke, and none worked, only MPC HC Media Player even coming close, but unable to get past the castle opening, while Windows Media Player glitches the hell out, like the movie's having a stroke.
And good old reliable VLC doesn't even boot it up, so yeah, whatever formatting was done utterly hates Windows 7 Windows 8 was practically brand new the year this DVD came out.
And this isn't unique, I looked it up, this was a common issue around that year in Google searching for this specific problem, though interestingly enough, Frozen's DVD released barely a year later, had no problems in another PC I had running Windows 7.
Perhaps it likes Windows 8 better or maybe it just wants me to play it on a DVD player. Wouldn't be shocked if it somehow worked in my PS2 slim, but I'm not that motivated to try it out In short, whoever had this idea to format it in whatever way it functions here where it isn't recognized by an OS that was common at the time should be fired or if not already having left the relevant company, should be shown how utterly frustrating this is.
