Chernobyl (2019) - Official Trailer - HBOI almost could smell it. An explanation was simple: the series were filmed on locations in Ukraine and Lithuania, where, with a little effort, one could find such a kitchen, even today.
There were such locations as Moscow, which was out of reach of the filming crew, for obvious reasons, where they bedan to struggle with "realism". Hence some utterly ridiculius images of, for example, of a huge poster-size painting named "Ivan the Terrible killing his son" on a wall in the Kremlin's corridor I am sure many eagle-eyed viewers have spotted numerous inconsistencies and mistakes of various degrees in the series.
Let us forgive them. After all, this work is about a foreign country, depicting the events that took place 35 years Btw, there is no jury in Russian courts to this day, in most cases.
It was interesting to see the Russian reaction when the series were released in May. It seems everybody - from the government to its media - took offence.
But why? Because of all that servility, incompetence and the cover-up the Soviet system was build on?
Or because the Russians still deny that? As to the cover-up I am struggling to understand the reason why the authors have stopped half way to the top, white-washing Gorbachev himself of doing anything wrong.
Anyone who lived in the USSR knows that all decisions inevitably were made on the very top of the pyramid. So, if one looks for someone to blame, the main perpetrators are still above the criticism Which reminds me what Gorbachev once said.
Apparently, he suggested that the Chernobyl disaster caused Soviet Union to collapse I respectively disagree: the Soviet Union has exploded and collapsed, just like the 4th reactor in Chernobyl, because its goverment wasn't idiot-proof and, as soon as an idiot came to power, what happened became as unavoidable as fate itself.
My review score isn't for the show itself it is for the whole package show and blu-ray. A lot of reviews are just for the show itself so here is my opinion.
The show is outstanding so if you haven't seen it and are looking to purchase this to view it for the first time..
The blu-ray is a standard blu-ray case with two discs inside. I don't think you will want it any sharper I have a 4k TV and the picture is fantastic.
This series has serious attention to detail so you want to see it as clear as possible. The blu-ray picture is exactly as it was when it was shown so good job there.
The box art however is totally different to the promotional material or poster or images used to promote the series to the point I had to double check that this wasnt one of those other documentaries about chernobyl.
Or a sleeve of the original art with this underneath. This new cover art gives it more of a horror type feel to it for those who havent seen it and this series isn't a horror.
It is horrific but not like the cover is suggesting compared to the original artwork. But this is just a niggle. I'm just used to the original artwork and liked that one.
Special Features Now this is a series that really should have at the very least a directors commentary.
In the HBO version that was aired they had clips of the makers of the show talking about the next episode etc. Probeer het nog eens.

We see quiet heroism the general who undertakes dirty work himself rather than assign it to one of his countless subordinates and we see unspeakable treachery tossed off so casually one might even miss it.

This did not disappoint. The acting, the pace and accuracy of the story told are truly excellent. Not too much science to bamboozle the uninitiated, the story is told in such a carefully crafted way that the desperation of the immediate aftermath is shown brilliantly, and is gripping, if saddening, to watch.
There are so many moments in this drama that bring home the sacrifices made in making the plant safe, and even then luck paid a major part in preventing a much larger catastrophic disaster.
The memorial to those , who helped deal with this disaster has an inscription that reads "To those who saved the World" Had things gone badly in the aftermath, we would today be looking at a map of Europe with a triangle of land running roughly from the Black Sea to Germany to Estonia that would be labelled "Exclusion Zone".
I've heard people say that "Saving Private Ryan" is a movie that they want their kids to watch when old enough to understand the sacrifices made by ordinary people so that they are free today, Chernobyl is a TV series that the same should watch to understand how ordinary people sacrificed themselves to prevent a truly catastrophic calamity from impacting a large part of Europe, because it was close, very, very close.
