I am scratching my head in confusion about this release. It is the same exact quality and sound as the older DVD release of it, plus it still doesn't have the missing segments that others have discussed.

What is so "Remastered and Deluxe Edition" about it? The extras make no sense either. There is the usual "facts and bio" nonsense and then for some reason there are three Bugs Bunny cartoons as extras that also aren't remastered and there is a loud hissing sound in the audio when they play.

When I first heard about this rerelease I was so excited thinking that the animated version would finally get the royal treatment, but no.

I am going to return it to Amazon and get my money back. As any enthusiast of this movie probably knows, when the movie was originally converted to DVD there were numerous defects in the sound, and a few edits that disrupted the original narrative flow I imagine I'm not the only person who can quote this movie verbatim.

In particular, in the scene where Smaug is flying over Laketown, the guards fire a barrage of arrows at him. In the original, there was a distinctive staccato ringing sound as of many arrows striking a hard surface, but in the previous defective DVD release, this sound effect is absent.

I thought that in the "new release", this issue and the numerous other defects would be corrected, but all Warner Bros.

I'm trying not to take this personally, but this under-handed maneuver really does seem like an insult both to their customers and to the legacy of JRR Tolkien.

Stick with your VHS copy, because that's gonna have to last probably forever, or at least until someone who has some modicum of integrity decides to remaster it correctly and re-release it.
