Chappie helpt de bijna levenloze Deon mee in zijn auto en met Chappie achter het stuur rijden ze naar Tetravaal. Daar aangekomen sluit Chappie de stervende Deon via de helm aan op de computer, die verbonden is met een andere robot, en wordt Deons bewustzijn verplaatst naar die robot.

Chappies accu is bijna leeg, maar Deon, die nu een robot-lichaam heeft, helpt Chappie om ook zijn bewustzijn te verplaatsen, op afstand, naar een robot elders in de stad.

Deon gaat er vervolgens naartoe, en het blijkt gelukt. Yolandi overleeft de aanslag uiteindelijk niet, maar Chappie herinnert zich nog dat er van tevoren van Yolandi via de helm een test back-up van haar bewustzijn is gemaakt die op een USB-stick staat, die ze misschien nog kunnen uploaden naar een andere robot.

Als ze met hun computer inbreken in de productie van Tetravaal robots, rolt er een robot van de band die lijkt op Yolandi, en opent de robot haar ogen.

Regisseur Blomkamp maakte eerder al de korte films Tetra Vaal en Tempbot , over robots met menselijke gevoelens. Chappie is de derde langspeelfilm van Blomkamp.

Hij schreef het scenario samen met zijn vrouw Terri Tatchell. De opnames van de film Chappie begonnen eind oktober in Johannesburg. De opnames werden afgerond in februari Op 21 november werd bekendgemaakt dat de filmmuziek werd gecomponeerd door Hans Zimmer.

These two portray some of the most annoying characters in the last decade, performs poor acting, and are some of the most unlikeable characters that an audience have ever been asked to like.

Their characters embodies the quintessence of the word "loser", as they portray skinny, white, tattooed, "wannabe gangsta", trailer trash, deadbeat, drug dealing, violent, narcissistic, hateful, psychopaths, who corrupts and destroys anything they get their hands on.

And the audience is asked to like them. This is a problem. But the biggest and most blaring issue with Chappie is the script.

Instead of experiencing the birth of "First true AI" and experiencing the all-important consequences for humanity unfold in a grand and spectacular story, all the audience gets is Chappie being "kidnapped" and raised by these scum of the Earth, who teaches him how to swear and be "gangsta".

It's attempted to do this with humor but it only intensifies one's resentment of the whole situation and the tragedy of it.

The story is horribly unfocused and loses sight of it's own enormous potential. The horrendous lack of creativity is the most heart-dropping aspect however, because Blomkamp, who was so creative with every aspect of D9, not only copies off of other people, but copies off of himself!

Almost every aspect of Chappie is a copy of another film. Chappie's design is a ripoff of the fantastic character Briaeros from the superb Appleseed universe, Dev Patel's character is nearly identical to the inventor in Big Hero 6, Hugh Jackman's robot is a replica of the ED from Robocop 1, while the idea of a "robot cop with a human-like consciousness" is also a rip off from Robocop, though slightly varied here.

But Blomkamp also copies off of himself, by repeating his use of Johannesburg as setting D9 , having robot law enforcement Elysium , having human controlled robots with weapons D9 and having characters hide in the slum of Johannesburg.

The lack of creativity is appalling and disheartening, since Blomkamp is one of the beacons of hope for the genre.

Chappie is a film that had all the potential in the world. An entity of the likes the world has never seen comes into existence, presenting humanity with a unique, once in a lifetime chance, of shaping this entity, Chappie, and imbue it with wisdom, kindness, and goodness of man.

If this could be done successfully, Chappie could have been "raised" to see the good in mankind and know right from wrong from the viewpoint of a truly moral, ethic and enormously intelligent person, his maker, Dev Patel's character.

It is very plausible to imagine Chappie, as the very first true AI, to be in a position in which he could influence, or even lead, subsequent robots with consciousness.

If he was "raised" right, and taught goodness to fellow AI robots like him, it could mean the beginning of a truly integrated, peaceful and harmonic existence between robot and man decades down the line.

On the other hand, if Chappie was raised wrong and taught fear and hate, then the exact opposite situation could occur, and Chappie could imbue his hate into fellow robots and lead a rebellion which kills off mankind.

We've seen this sort of occur in the reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Chappie could be, quite literally, the savior or destroyer of Man.

And which he will be, might very well be determined by his upbringing. How he is raised. The thought of this makes the petty, narrow-minded story about low-life, criminal scum planning a heist and corrupting Chappie, cause you to cringe in your heart.

These clowns could end up destroying mankind. And we are asked to cheer for them. There are so many things wrong with Chappie that it just does not make up for the fact that Chappie himself is fun and Sharlto Copley is entertaining, as always.

Please Blomkamp. Turn it around, and lets remember Chappie as the low point in your, still promising, career.
