I only watched this film when it was on telly because I am a big fan of Renee O'Connor who had a biggish part in it, and I wanted to see more of her work in films, but I wasnt really expecting this film to be good.
But I was in for a surprise - I think the film turned out to be really good - with some good action scenes - and the acting from everyone - especially Larry Drake Durant was brilliant.
I have heard that the first of the "Darkman" triology there is also a third which I also recommend is the best, directed by Sam Raimi, so I would like to see that too, but this particular film blew me away.
Look out for some great scenes between Darkman and a bad guy - Ivan. Overall, the whole film is great, and if you are a fan of Renee O'Connor, then you would like it because her performance in it is really good.

They slated it for release in August at the end of the summer release cycle. You know, the same month of the year they released "Coyote Ugly"?
But the film was a success garnering almost 50 million on a 16 million dollar budget. Liam Neeson plays Peyton Westlake, a scientist on the verge of inventing synthetic skin from a series of photographs of the subject.
Thus disfigured people could wear his synthetic mask and be moved toward a more normal life. Peyton's girlfriend, Julie, a journalist, has found a memorandum indicating a developer she knows made a Mafia payout in connection with a development he is building.
She makes the mistake of telling said developer that she has this proof of his crime, but that she doesn't have it on her.
Peyton is burned beyond recognition but lands in the nearby bay. With no ID, as a John Doe, Peyton is given really good treatment by the hospital which takes the drastic step of severing nerves that allow him to feel pain, else he would spend all of his time screaming in pain from the burns.
He escapes from the hospital, and meanwhile his assistant is buried as Peyton. You'd think family or friends would come looking for the assistant, but I guess that's another film.
So Peyton continues his work on skin regeneration, with his lab now acting as a kind of batcave, and things are urgent because Peyton needs this cure for himself as his face and hands are horribly disfigured.
As things are he has only 99 minutes before the artificial skin decomposes. And this works for some good fun for the next part of the film, because Peyton wants revenge on top of a cure.
Plus he needs money. He finds a chance for revenge and money by posing as the different people who "killed him" and then just counting on the worst instincts of these thugs - and they have plenty of them - to turn on each other.
But then a mistake - Peyton lets Julie know he's alive -wearing artificial skin of course - and that memorandum that was the whole point of ruining Peyton's life?
It turns up on a desk, with the coffee stain Julie put there herself at Peyton's loft, right before he died. And now Julie knows Peyton's "death" was no accident.
I'll let you see how things work out from here. The real revelation here was Larry Drake as evil Robert Durant. He strokes a small furry pet wearing gloves and an apron that says "Kiss the Cook" while maintaining his collection of human fingers he has taken from people who do not pay their debts to him.
The reason he was a revelation? For years before this he had played a mentally handicapped man who has been working at the law firm showcased by "LA Law".
It was a kind of last request from his dying mother to the firm so her son would have a purpose in life. To go from that gentle persona to a heartless monster shows Drake had range most people did not think he had.
Give it a try. The special effects have aged a bit, but the human factors make it still relevant. StormSworder 22 March Peyton Westlake is a scientist who is researching synthetic skin tissue in order to help scarred victims of accidents.
However, the tissue becomes unstable after 99 minutes. Peyton never has a chance to work on this, as the shady dealings of a property tycoon result in him being hideously disfigured when a gang of thugs blow up his lab.
Peyton becomes the subject of an experimental new process being developed in the hospital involving the severing of nerves which cause pain.
Escaping the hospital, he starts using his synthetic skin tissue to create copies of the faces of his enemies, in order to avenge himself on the villains who turned him into Darkman, a 'Phantom of the Opera'-like character.
What puts this film above countless other action-thrillers is that it deals with emotion just as much as violence.
I really felt for Peyton as to struggled to come to terms with his suffering, and the surreal nightmare sequences are very effective. The film is filled with strong characters - whether he is being monstrous or emotional, Liam Neeson dominates his every scene as Darkman.
Durant is a genuinely chilling villain, and the action sequences never become dull due to their often outlandish qualities.

But those who come from the Evil Dead films expecting a dark side crossed with some very sick, amazing gags and over-the-top jokes might wonder where the latter is at.

It's violent, and in a Hollywood 'action' mode most of the time with big explosions, a fairly high body count, and suspense as a man seeks revenge when not completely whole.
It also is the kind of pre-film, which may be dumb to say as 'pre' gets overused, but one can see the relation to comics like Spawn, V for Vendetta, and of course the future filmmaker of the solid Spiderman features.
At times though he does really walk the line of doing something different with the revenge tale of having it over-done not work.
He has the style knacked for it, but as a first time going at it here and there it does get a bit too much. That being said, those who are coming to this film after having seen most of Raimi's other work get a convincingly B-story to go along with his wild techniques.
Liam Neeson stars as a on-the-brink-of-something-big scientist who gets about as horribly close to death as possible after ruthless rather ruthless in as much comic-book as 80's action-movie gangsters do "a number" on him and his lab.
Assumed dead, he puts his equipment back together, puts on masks of his enemies, and little by little gets back at them while trying to have a connection with his old love Frances McDormand connected to all of this as well.
I loved one scene where Neeson and McDormand are at the carnival, with the imagery hitting harsh other freak , and then his frustration over a game.
This is a scene emblematic of what Raimi is doing, and does more often than not, with his material.
Darkman is ambitious on that level of the visual, of trying to make a picture that in other hands would be very standard and possibly wretched in dramatic presentation, because it is both original and homage, typical in some ways and notable in others.
These two sides may frustrate viewers; I'm inclined almost to say that this is even more 'cult' than Raimi's Evil Dead films.
Moments of hilarity do come up sometimes, and it is with some relief when it does come along, though sometimes too the subtle black-comic approach doesn't hit.
It's worth a watch though if you're a comic book fan or even just into thrillers that don't kid themselves too much. Up to par with the rest of the director's work?

Durant burns down Westlake and his lab but Westlake manages to survive. He is given a bizarre procedure which takes away all physical pain but amplifies his emotions.
Westlake vows to have revenge on Durant. He uses his research to destroy Durant's mob and his boss Louis Stack. It's sad really that this is the definitive Sam Raimi superhero film.
The camera work here is the best of Raimi's career. Liam Neeson starts off his career as a leading man on an extremely high note.
The script has moments of weakness but our actors manage to hit all the high notes and achieve greatness. The make-up effects should have taken home the Oscar.
OK, you've got Dr. Peyton Westlake who is in the process of inventing artificial skin, some bad guys blow him up good, and through a dubious operation he now feels no pain at all.
This last fact is important because he is horribly burned all over his body, a fact that he attempts to hide by wearing a very cinematic trench-coat and fedora.
He takes to dispatching the said bad guys who ruined his life one by one, etc. He also tries to rekindle the flame of his lost love and perfect the fake skin, all against the backdrop of a quasi-mystery involving corporate greed.
Is it extremely fun to watch? With all the goofy happenings, implausible situations, mustache twirling bad guys and the melodramatic inner conflict within the main character, the film has a sense of humor and a sly self awareness.
The performances are good and there are several clever scenes ex: the two Drakes in the revolving door , to keep you watching.
Quick Trivia: When Liam Neeson stumbles out of the alley near the beginning of the film, he is splashed with water.

There's horror here , black comedy there , a little bit of action , thriller and science fiction. Together it all creates a very enjoyable movie that in my opinion is much more fun than any of Raimi's "Spiderman" movies.
The only thing that in my opinion stopped this movie from being a classic is the lack of heart. When it comes to having fun Raimi's movie never fails , but every moment that should be heart wrenching comes out like a soap opera.
It would be one of the many problems in his Spiderman movies. Beside that I could only complain about special effects that are rather outdated in few places.
The movie is quite visually nice and the music by Danny Elfman is great. Some of the camera shots like when Nesson is beaten in the lab are really cool.
There is a lot of humor here and I like the feel of 80's here. Liam Nesson "Schindler's list" shines as the scarred scientist who seeks revenge.
It's impressive how he can switch from delicate and humble man to blood-thirsty monster. It feels very natural and you care about him from start to finish.
Equally great is Larry Drake as Robert Durant. He's character was supposed to be only supporting villain , yet he's definitely the most interesting bad guy here.

Bodyguard Marc Steidle Release Dates.Although slightly more stylized than the film The editing was an absolute mess, however, and at times it made no sense mixing in random footage from the film.
The script is also pretty bland and generic, and there is an annoying over-reliance on voice-over work. All that being said, it still seemed like it had potential.
With some careful editing and re-shoots , this could have been a halfway decent pilot. I'm giving this a 3 out of It was below-average, but I've seen worse shows than this actually get picked up.
